Shilshole Bay SUP

Shilshole Bay sits just north of the Ballard Locks — the transition between the freshwater Ship Canal and saltwater Puget Sound. The marina here is one of Seattle’s largest, which means protected water inside the breakwaters and open Puget Sound right outside them. The two environments are separated by about 200 yards.

The Launch

Shilshole Bay Marina stretches along the waterfront north of the Locks. The best SUP access is from the beach areas adjacent to the marina rather than the working marina docks. Golden Gardens Park, directly north of the marina, provides the most accessible beach launch for paddlers who want open sound access without navigating the marina.

Parking: Large free lot at Golden Gardens. Marina parking is ample on weekdays. Both fill on summer weekend afternoons — arrive before noon if possible.

On the Water

Inside the bay: Relatively protected. Watch for sailboats and motorboats coming in and out of the marina. The breakwater provides some shelter from northerlies but the bay mouth is open to southerly swells.

North toward Golden Gardens: Paddle along the beach, shallow and sandy. Good for beginners on calm mornings. The beach extends about 0.5 miles and is popular with swimmers in summer — give them space.

Open sound heading northwest: Once past the Golden Gardens beach, you are in open Puget Sound. Intermediate to advanced paddlers only. The sound opens up toward the Olympic Peninsula with ferry routes crossing to the west. Stay well clear of the shipping lanes.

Conditions and Timing

  • Best window: Early morning on calm days. By early afternoon, northwesterly winds build consistently in summer.
  • Tides: Matter here. Low tide exposes rocks along the beach. High tide gives cleaner access but less beach for staging.
  • Sunset paddles: Golden Gardens is famous for Olympic Mountain sunsets. An evening paddle here on a clear summer day is worth timing specifically — check when the sun sets and launch 90 minutes before.
  • Skill level: Beginner-friendly close to shore on calm mornings; intermediate required for open sound.
