Green Lake is the right place to learn SUP in Seattle. It is small enough that you are never far from shore, no motorboats are allowed, and the water is almost always flat. On a calm morning it is genuinely glassy. The park surrounds the entire lake, so you can pull off wherever you want without worrying about private property.
The Launch
No formal ramp — just carry your board to the water from any of the three beach access areas. The main swimming beach on the east side (off E Green Lake Dr N) is the most popular, with the most parking and the widest beach for staging gear. The west side off Aurora Ave N and the north side off Green Lake Way N are quieter alternatives.
Address (main beach): E Green Lake Dr N & W Green Lake Dr N, Seattle, WA 98103

Parking: Pay lots on E Green Lake Dr N and W Green Lake Dr N. Street parking around the lake is free but competitive on weekends. The lot on the north side (Green Lake Way N) is often overlooked and cheaper to find space. Arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends or expect a walk.
On the Water
The lake is about 1.5 miles around. A casual circumnavigation takes 45-60 minutes. For a workout, do two or three loops. The path around the lake is heavily used by runners and cyclists, so launch and land with awareness — pedestrians have the right of way at the beach entries.
Water clarity varies by season. Algae advisories occur in late summer (July-September) — check Seattle Parks notices before swimming or paddling if you plan to go in the water. The lake is shallow by Pacific Northwest standards (max depth about 32 feet), which means it warms up earlier in spring and cools slower in fall.

- Rentals: SUP rentals available at the lake from local vendors in summer — useful if you want to try before you buy
- Dogs: On-leash on the path; no dogs in the swim area
