Golden Gardens is Seattle’s best beach for sunset paddling. The park faces west toward the Olympic Mountains, and in clear weather — which happens more in fall and early spring than in July — the sky behind the Olympics goes through orange, pink, and red as the sun drops. Paddling 200 yards offshore for this light is worth planning a specific evening around.
The Launch
The beach at Golden Gardens runs about 0.5 miles along Seaview Pl NW. The sand is wide and the entry gradual — easy SUP launch with no ramp needed. The north end of the beach (away from the marina) is quieter and has more space for staging gear. The south end near the parking lot entrance sees more foot traffic.

Parking: Large free lot directly adjacent to the beach. Fills on summer weekend afternoons and evenings — for sunset paddles, arrive by 5 PM in summer to secure a spot or use the overflow parking along Seaview Pl NW.
The Sunset Paddle
Launch 60-90 minutes before sunset. Paddle west until you are 200-400 yards offshore — far enough to clear the beach crowd and get the full western horizon in view. The Olympics rise to the west and the setting sun tracks toward the mountain gaps in winter (dramatic) or well north of the peaks in summer (still good light). The ferry routes from Seattle to Bainbridge and Kingston cross the northern sound in the background.
Return to shore before dark. The beach can be difficult to read from the water after sunset, and Puget Sound conditions can change quickly in evening thermal winds.
Conditions
Golden Gardens is semi-protected by Shilshole Bay and the marina breakwater to the south, but the bay mouth opens northwest to Puget Sound. Afternoon northwesterly winds develop regularly in summer — they typically diminish around sunset, which is part of what makes evening the best time. Morning conditions are also usually calm. Midday is often the worst window due to sea breeze development.
Practical Notes
- Tides: Low tide exposes more beach but the launch remains easy at any tide level
- Summer fire pits: The beach has fire pits that fill on summer evenings — expect a lively beach scene when you return from your sunset paddle
- Connection to Shilshole: Shilshole Bay Marina is directly adjacent to the south — the combined Golden Gardens to Shilshole area gives multiple launch options and easy re-access if conditions shift
- Best season for views: October through February for clear Olympic Mountain sunsets; summer often has marine layer through sunset
- Skill level: Beginner-friendly close to shore on calm mornings and evenings; intermediate for open sound paddling
